Happy New Year

“Every new year is like a sunrise.   A new day. A new opportunity. A new light. It is like we reset the previous year and set new goals new hopes. So we have new wishes for ourselves and our loved ones.” – Yaprak Sapanli Gorur.

This year was the year to decide and explore what I wanted and didn’t want.

There is never a honeymoon

I permitted myself to have a honeymoon for the first time since 1998. I started my internship at 3M back in 1998, and since then, I have been not just working, but I was spinning from one role to another without having any break. Then, one day, one of the EVPs I worked with closely told me about this manifestation. He said there is never a “honeymoon.”

After all, it was a true statement, and if you are climbing fast in the corporate world, you never have the opportunity or even have the motive in a moment to have this break to have the honeymoon. Because there is only one target- to exceed your goals, your business numbers, your personal goals.

Even after I decided to quit the corporate world, the transition was not easy. I started to work hard, like what I used to know, as a pre-programmed machine, and I forgot why I left the corporate world and took over a lot of clients more than even I set myself up as a goal, and maybe, in the end, I overwhelmed myself a little.

In the end, I decided to take 2021 as a transition. Finally!!! I gave myself a break; I gave myself to go for a honeymoon. I gradually lessened the number of clients and did not take over any additional clients. Instead had a very long summer, chased after one dream together I had with my husband, and explored the sailing world, advancing sailing skills and learning to navigate at sea.

Navigating at Sea

You advance your skills and become another person; you face opportunities to develop, like looking to the mirror and facing reality. I developed confidence at sea, as we faced some challenges and problems during our journeys at sea. We learned different ways of solving problems, exploring, and admitting that we are starting another learning journey. It was enriching.

I encountered some of my other fears throughout 2021; I got frustrated. In the end, when I realized that I was creating my own Deja Vu myself, and I decided to “let go.” Then finally, something happened as a miracle; the biggest problem in my life settled down and sorted itself out automatically. It took me six months to realize that it sorted itself out in the end. Isn’t it true that the problems we face keep repeating until we learn our lesson?

For me, 2021 was a big transition and a transformation year in many ways.

Heading towards 2022

Now I head towards 2022, I am crisp clear, and I started to ask the same old questions that I ask myself either on my birthday (end of Oct) or New Year Eve, therefore the end of Quarter 4- same period. This reflection is a process I have followed since I knew myself. It became easier as I joined the corporate world, setting goals for the next year, evaluating the previous year, and so on. It became a trained muscle over 20 years with some corporate tools as an HR person.
I assess how I did against my goals in that year and what I would like to accomplish next year.

Harvard University Study

Setting your goals and even writing them is 50% guarantees achieving that. A study by Harvard University proved it. The study was conducted back in the late 70s-80s.

Pre Study – The ’79 MBA students before graduation;

  • 84% of the graduate’s -had no goals at all
  • 13% of the graduate’s -had written goals but had no concrete plans
  • 3% of the graduate’s – had both written goals and concrete plans

Post Study- 10 years later

  • 13% of the graduate’s made 2X as much money as the rest of the 84%.
  • And; 3% of the graduate’s made 10X as much as the rest of the 97% of the graduates.
