What if you could live your life again?

I recently finished reading Replay by Ken Grimwood.
A close friend mentioned the book during one of our catch-ups. She was reading it at the time, and out of curiosity, I bought a copy.
The story follows a man who dies at age 50 and suddenly finds himself back in his university years, given the chance to live his life again. And then again. Each replay unfolds differently, shaped by new decisions, different relationships, unexpected circumstances, and the knowledge he carries forward from the life before.
As I read, one thought stayed with me:

We always have a choice.

Perhaps not about everything that happens to us. But about what we do next.
After finishing the book, I found myself discussing this with two people very close to me, a dear friend and my cousin.
We started talking about the inevitable “what ifs.”
• What if you could live your life again?
• What would you choose differently?
• What would you keep exactly the same?
• Which opportunities would you take?
• Which ones would you walk away from sooner?
And perhaps the most interesting question of all:

Knowing what you know today, if you could live your life again, how different would your choices be?

Every person’s story is unique. And none of our stories are static.
We change.
Our circumstances change.
What matters to us changes.
And sometimes, possibilities we could not see yesterday become very real tomorrow.
Perhaps the most powerful realization is this:
We don’t need the chance to replay our entire lives to make a different choice.
We can make one today.
• A conversation we can have.
• A boundary we can set.
• A new habit we can start.
• An unhealthy routine we can stop.
• A direction we can reconsider.
• A possibility we can finally allow ourselves to explore.
And that is what makes our lives so precious.
We cannot go back and rewrite the chapters already behind us. But as long as there is a next chapter, there is still something we can choose.
So imagine yourself years from now, looking back at the life you are living today.
Which choices would your future self wish you had made differently?
And perhaps even more importantly:
What can you choose today so that, years from now, you can look back and say, “Yes, I would choose this again”?
What will you choose next?
Inspired by a recent reading of Replay and by the central idea behind my book, What Now? From Autopilot to a Life You Choose.
